Vessela Tcherneva

Programme Director and Head of ECFR Sofia Office

Since 2016 Vessela Tcherneva is Programme Director and Head of European Council on Foreign Relations (, Sofia Office. She is Director of Wider Europe programme in ECFR since 2013.

Since February 2010 Vessela Tcherneva is the Speaker of the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In 2008-2010 shehas been the Head of the Sofia office and Senior Policy Fellow at the European Council on Foreign Realtions (, which is hosted by CLS. She has been Program Director for Foreign Policy Studies at the Centre for Liberal Strategies since 2003. Between 2004 and 2006, she has been coordinating the activities of the International Commission on the Balkans chaired by Mr. Giuliano Amato ( Ms. Tcherneva is Supervising Editor of the Foreign Policy-Bulgaria magazine since its establishment in April 2005.

Her previous career includes service as Political officer at the Bulgarian Embassy in Washington, D.C. (2000 – 2003) and Desk Oficer for Germany at the Bulgarian MFA.

Ms. Tcherneva holds a Masters degree in Political Sciences from the Rheinische Friedrich Wilhelms-Universität in Bonn.
